Ministry proposes Kids Sukma from next year

BERA: The Youth and Sports Ministry proposes to organise the Kids Sukma, a nursery-level sporting event, starting next year to scout for talent at an early age.

Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said yesterday the ministry planned to develop new talent among children as Malaysia was still short of world-class athletes.

He said the ministry would discuss with the Rural and Regional Development Ministry and the Education Ministry to decide on the direction of the programme.

“Many big countries such as China have started scouting for athletes at an early age because they would be easier to mould and train to become world-class champions,” he said at the Bera district Kemas kindergarten graduation day here yesterday.

He said that through the Kids Sukma, children would be exposed to popular sports such as football, badminton, athletics and other games to add variety to the competition.

Malaysia had proven to be capable of producing talented world-class athletes such as Datuk Nicol David and Datuk Misbun Sidek, with the right strategy, he said.

However, he said, the ministry’s efforts to promote sports among children needed support from parents.
